BROKEN COLLORBONE

W A N D E R I N G

AXEL MAASS

“In human anatomy, the clavicle or collarbone is a long bone of short length that serves as a strut between the scapula and thesternum. It is the only long bone in the body that lies horizontally. It makes up part of the shoulder and the pectoral girdle and is palpable in all people, and, in people who have less fat in this region, the location of the bone is clearly visible as it creates a bulge in the skin. It receives its name from the Latin: clavicula (“little key”) because the bone rotates along its axis like a key when the shoulder is abducted, and it is roughly the same shape as a key for a Roman door lock.”

“ The clavicle serves several functions:

  • It serves as a rigid support from which the scapula and free limb (arm) are suspended; an arrangement that keeps the upper limb away from the thorax so that the arm has maximum range of movement. Acting as flexible, crane-like strut, it allows the scapula to move freely on the thoracic wall.

  • Covering the cervicoaxillary canal, it protects the neurovascular bundle that supplies the upper limb.

  • Transmits physical impacts from the upper limb to the axial skeleton.”

I guess I need this for cycling but at day 4 I decided to destroy my left collarbone!

09/16/12 is a wonderful day to cycle from Corvallis to Newport at the Pacific coast. The weather couldn’t be better, the hills were long and nice to fight. I stretched my body because my left leg felt uncomfy after a wasp bitten in it right after the start. The road was downhill with an angle. I did not recognize that after the road line was just loose material, gravel. Too close to Marvin, I came off-side the road, recognized that I cannot brake and drove into a trench full of big stones. My bike stopped immediately. Marvin looked back, saw me flying over the handbare and struggled, too. He could brake in the trench, I felt on my shoulder and broke my collarbone. I knew it immediately. Nothing happend except of this.

Sitting there in shock,  I just had thoughts about the costs (I have no insurance) and that I destroyed Marvins vacation. Nice people stopped and gave me ice to cool my shoulder. Andrew took me to the hospital. It’s creepy how this system works. The doctors are freelancer and every move they do they got payed. Nobody knows how much it’ll cost. A guy tld me of ear-drops for 400$, I was warned. Searching for the best solution we change the hospital. I thought about flying back to Germany for heath care issues . It’s a scandal that you have to think about money instead of your health. After long discussions I decided to see the doctor. The assistent entered the room which costs me 172$, just for enter the room. I got x-rays for (I don’t know) and saw my broken bone. They send me home with an armband, without medicine and lots of question marks.

My plan:

  • I am still in search for one and will tell you in another post

My Fuji Touring bicycle:

  • I lost my computer, which I bought a day before

  • The rear wheel is destroyed

  • I got a new and better wheel and new white fenders (the old ones did not fit anymore)

Marvin:

  • He is on his way to the coast and San Francisco - on my bike
